Cleaning suited to the rug

Foot traffic, spills, and embedded dust can leave a well-loved wool rug ready for a thorough cleaning. We first assess the rug’s condition and construction, whether it is handwoven or machine-tufted, and choose a suitable method for its fibers and dyes.

Depending on the rug, cleaning may include removing loose grit, washing to address deeper soil, careful hand work on affected areas, thorough rinsing, and controlled drying. We select cleaning products and techniques for the particular rug rather than treating every wool piece the same way.

Have a sheep’s wool or camel-hair rug with a stain or odor? Tell us what happened and we can discuss an appropriate evaluation and estimate. Results depend on the rug and the nature of the damage.

Silk’s fine fibers and intricate designs call for special attention. Whether your piece is an area rug or a wall tapestry, we begin by understanding its condition before recommending how to care for it.

A silk rug may be vulnerable to color movement, changes in texture, and damage from unsuitable cleaning methods. We inspect the fibers, dyes, construction, and any stains or wear before deciding which treatment may be appropriate. Some stains cannot be removed safely, and we’ll tell you honestly.

An older handwoven rug can carry generations of history. Age, prior repairs, fragile areas, and dye behavior all matter when deciding how to clean it. Some pieces may be suitable for washing; others need a more limited approach. We pay close attention to drying, since fragile fibers and unstable dyes can be affected by the wrong process.

If we find rips, missing areas, unraveling edges, or discoloration, we can discuss repair or restoration separately and provide an estimate before proceeding.

They are fully trained to repair damage from wear and tear, pet urine, corrosive chemicals, fire, flooding, improper care, moth infestations, vacuuming, and more. We offer individualized quotes for every repair and restoration and can tailor options to fit most budgets. At no extra charge, we pick up and deliver your rug, including moving furniture, lifting heavy rugs (up to 400 lbs.), and taking tapestries down from walls. How to get started

We offer consignment for Oriental rugs of all types. If you have a Persian, antique, handwoven, or other Oriental rug to sell, tell us about its size, origin if known, condition, and any repairs. Photographs help us begin the conversation; you can email them to newportrugs@gmail.com.

Each rug is considered individually. We’ll arrange a time to see the rug, explain the proposed consignment terms, and pick it up if you decide to proceed.
