Vacuuming your Oriental Rug
New and sturdy old rugs can be vacuumed once a week. Antique and loosely knotted older Orientals should be vacuumed only once or twice a month. Ideally, never vacuum against the nap. This may press dirt back into the rug and put a strain on the knots.
Never vacuum the fringes. The continued catching of the fringe in the suction of the vacuum cleaner causes the fringe to break and tear. Sweeping with a broom ( for large rugs) or merely gently shaking a smaller rug and going over it with a damp sponge is sufficient.
For larger rugs, once or twice a year, turn the rug over and vacuum the back of the rug.
Be sure to call or e-mail Caravan Connection of Newport if you have any questions about your Oriental rug or if you are thinking about buying one.
